This will be short and
sweet, folks. I wanted to write just a few lines to commemorate the life and work of Doug Fieger.
The lead singer of The Knack died today after a lengthy battle with brain and lung cancer. He was
only 57.
How poignant and fitting that a writer of love songs that contributed to the musical backdrop in the late
70’s and early 80’s stepped into eternity on Valentine’s Day.
Who can forget their iconic song, My Sharona? I mean,
seriously, who can forget it? The musical hooks on that song created one of the first eternal earworms
of memory. While the lyrics could have been a bit less controversial, the tune will go down in history
as one of the top songs in rock history.
As the last of the Baby Boomers entered into college, the military or pursued careers, Fieger’s vocals
on “My Sharonz” figured heavily in the sound track of their youth. Now that voice is silent.
Doug Fieger contributed vocals to
Bruce Kulick’s new album, BK3. In my interview with Kulick, he said this about Fieger: “He’s
a real gentleman” Commenting on the Doug is known for My Sharona, Kulick concluded his comments on him by saying, “I’m
hoping that they’ll (Fieger and the boys) be known for one other song – it’ll be Dirty Girl.
That’ll be fun.”
The first of the Boomers have mourned the loss of many of the definitive voices of their youth. The
last of the Boomers have lost some of their voices with the deaths of Joey Ramone, Joe Strummer, to name a couple.
Now, we mourn the loss of Doug Fieger.
Thank you for the sounds and memories, Doug.
Rest in peace.
