Old School Thang
Billy Hector
Label: Ghetto Surf
Review Date: April 19, 2015

“Old School Thang” is the latest project by New Jersey blues legend, Billy Hector. The CD is a treasure chest of ten original tunes and a cover tribute to Freddie King’ take on Don Nix’s “Goin’ Down”.

While he may be an unfamiliar name to many of you, Hector has more than 35 years of live performances, including two appearances at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame American Masters Series. He will be performing at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on April 25th as part of the “Lead Belly at 125” tribute along with Alvin Youngblood Hart, Josh White, Jr., Robert Plant and others.

“Old School Thang”, Hector’s 11th album on the Ghetto Surf label, features a supporting cast of musicians that have been part of his musical family for 35 years adding horns, keyboards and harp to Hector’s more familiar styling of bass, drums and guitar.

Each tune a musical gem on their own, three randomly chosen Boomerocity favorites are:

• The aforementioned, “Goin’ Down.” The guitar work on this is worth the price of the whole album. Yeah, it’s that great.

• “Old School Thang” conjures up visions of James Brown gettin’ on up. Again, the guitar work is just flippin’ amazing.

• “Come On Home” has got a “Lay Down Sally” vibe to it – one that would make Clapton smile.
